Medicine Cat Apprentice: ???
Mallowwhisker followed his/her Clan back to camp. He turned to them when they got into camp and said, "Well, that failed. Nice work, Froststar. Real proud of you. Getting some of our strongest warriors killed. Very proud."
Froststar hissed at him and then went to find Leopardlight. "We need a different idea. This isn't working! Our own cats are turning against us." He told her. "That's your problem, Froststar. I've told you before it wouldn't work. So why don't you go and deal with it while I tend to all of the cats you injured by leading us into battle," She started to pad off, but Froststar stopped her. "Leopardlight, you've always been my most trusted advisor. Please, help me! If we can take over the Clans, I will make you my Queen and we will rule together. Think of it! All of the Clans bowing down to you. You will be the most respected and feared she-cat in the forest. Just help me!" He pleaded. "That is your dream, Froststar, not mine. Now, please excuse me so that I can maybe save some of your cats," She leaned in close and whispered. "And remember, I am the only one who knows that you only have one life, Frostclaw. And even though I am a medicine cat, it is within my power to take that life if I feel you are getting out of hand," She ran into her den.
Leopardlight prepared another poultice to put on another wound. The den was already overflowing with injured warriors and apprentices, so she sent most to the Elder's den. There were very few actual elders there, so at least they'd have a little more room. As she worked, she thought about Froststar's proposal. Even though she had threatened him, his offer did sound pretty nice. Maybe then she could tell him her secret. Of course, he would find out for himself soon enough. She would have to stop being a medicine cat, and maybe even leave the Clan, but if she could get him to beg her to stay, not because he needed her for his schemes, but because he actually wanted her around, it would be worth it. The kits wouldn't be Froststar's, but since no one knew about them yet, she could pass them off as his. Then maybe he really would want her to stay. She turned back to the line of injured cats and started working again. Soon she would make the announcement. After she had trained an apprentice well enough. Swiftkit was six moons. She had always taken an interest in medicine cat work. If Leopardlight could train her well enough before anyone noticed, IceClan wouldn't be left without a medicine cat. She would ask Swiftkit if she wanted to be a Medicine Cat Apprentice in the morning.
Leopardlight padded out of the Medicine Cat Den and into the nursery. She went up to Swiftkit. "Today you are going to be apprenticed," She told her. "Would you like to be a medicine cat apprentice?" "Sure!" Swiftkit squealed. Her mother started to groom her. Leopardlight went to tell Froststar about the change.
"Why are you deciding to take on an apprentice now?" Froststar asked. "Now or then, what does it matter? I just felt it was time. Will you do it?" Leopardlight asked. "Fine. I'll make the announcement now," he jumped onto Large Stump. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath Large Stump for a Clan meeting. We have a new apprentice to make today. Swiftkit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Swiftpaw. Your mentor will be Leopardlight. I hope Leopardlight will pass down all she knows on to you. Leopardlight, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from myself, and you have shown yourself to be skillful and knowledgeable. You will be the mentor of Swiftpaw and I expect you to pass on all you know to her." The Clan chants, "Swiftpaw! Swiftpaw!"
Leopardlight takes Swiftpaw to her den. "Your training begins now. In two moons, you will know enough to be the medicine cat of IceClan. In fact, in two moons, you will be the medicine cat of IceClan. So let's start."
Leopardlight and Swiftheart return. Leopardlight goes up to Froststar's den. She enters without hesitation. "What is it, Leopardlight?" He asks, annoyed. "I am here to renounce my title as Medicine Cat." "WHAT???" He exclaimed. "Why?" "Maybe it's because I have broken one of the rules of medicine cats, and wish to be still respected by my Clan. Maybe it's because once you promised me that once I had an apprentice, I would be made deputy. Maybe it's because kits take a lot of effort. Maybe it's all of the above." "You're having kits? Whose?" Froststar asked, aghast. "Maybe." "Will you just give me a straight answer? Are you having kits or not?" "Yes." "Well, then whose kits are they?" "What if I said they were yours?" Froststar silences. "Are they?" He whispered. Leopardlight blinked innocently. "I just said 'what if'. What would you do if they were yours?" "I-I-I don't really know..." "Would you want me to be here if they were, just because you wanted me around, and not because you needed me for your plans?" she asked. "Yes." Froststar said after a little hesitation. "Good. I will move into the Queen's Den now. Please make the announcement today," Leopardlight walks out of the den with her head lifted. Froststar stares at the opening, stunned.
Once she's out of view, Leopardlight smirked. She knew they were actually Blackcloud's kits, but everyone else would believe that they were the leader's kits. She had him practically wrapped around her paw.
Violet suddenly sees a bright flame slowly igniting a tree. She turns to Hermione and Samba, "You two, get to the river. Now!" As they take off, Violet races back to IceClan's camp. She bursts in and turns to Froststar, "Um, Froststar, um, you kind of, um, have a fire on your territory?"

ReplyDeleteSwiftpaw is absolutely exhausted, but knows all about being a Medicine Cat. Leopardlight prepares to take her to Star Cave.
